Many things we take for granted today began as pure innovations in the past. For example, a century ago, few believed that ordinary people could be trusted to drive cars, and the idea of free healthcare was considered a fantasy, impossible to implement. But with deeper analysis of problems and the development of new and innovative solutions, much that was once impossible is now possible. In the past, innovation was not limited to traditional methods. While national strategies to support innovation in business and technology have proliferated, similar national strategies for understanding and supporting social innovation have been lacking. However, with the increasing number of social problems and challenges in various areas, such as health, education, poverty, and environmental pollution, we find ourselves facing wicked problems—complex problems
